What is Millipede? A brief history, how to play it, and more

History

Here we have the game Millipede – if you’ve ever played the popular Atari game Centipede then you likely know where this game originated. The focus of the game remains the same in that players are required to destroy segments of a slowly approaching (not so slowly as the game goes on) insect as well as defend themselves from the onslaught of other insects that appear in the game. Players in this game are able to control their characters via a trackball and a single button that they use to fire (rapid-fire if held down) at the different segments on the Millipede.

Gameplay

A few things have changed in the follow-up game to Centipede. The main thing you want to pay attention to is that players no longer play as the Bug Blaster that would sit at the bottom of the screen and shoot at sections of the Centipede – now players are able to play as an Archer, an elf who shoots at the Millipede as it advances towards the player (it advances side by side and doesn’t move down until it touches something or one of the sides of the screen)As soon as the Millipede manages to enter the area that the elf, Archer resides in extra heads appear and it will stay there until it’s destroyed.

*if you manage to shoot at a body segment the insect will split in half (just like in centipede) and if you touch an enemy you die, simple.

  • When you lose a life in the game all flowers (the indestructible ones) and poisoned mushrooms will change back to normal
  • There’s a DDT bomb in the game that can destroy all enemies when hit (at least in a certain blast radius)
  • There’s a port for the game that was made for the Atari 5200 that was never released
